Frequently Asked Questions

What is HackBU?

HackBU is an organization at Binghamton University that fosters a community of students who work together on projects that they are passionate about, outside the classroom. We exist to mentor students, help them learn the technologies that interest them most, and get them excited about programming and problem-solving.

What happens at a hackathon?

Hackathons are events where a bunch of "hackers" come together in teams with the intention of creating the best type of program (i.e. web app, iPhone app, etc) or hardware within a certain period of time.

Who can attend?

The event is open to all Binghamton University students 18 and older. You don't need to be a Computer Science major or engineer to participate!

What if I'm not from Binghamton?

No problem! We're looking to bring students from other nearby universities. When you register, select "Non-Binghamton Student" and bring your travel receipts so we can reimburse your expenses.

What if I'm a newbie?

Don't worry, beginners are welcome. Come to HackBU's weekly workshops to learn how to code.

What should I bring?

Bring your computer, hardware, and chargers. We'll provide the rest.

Do I need a team or idea to sign up?

No! We recommend registering with friends but there will be opportunities to brainstorm and meet other participants.

Will there be food?

Yes. We'll be providing meals and snacks so don't worry!

Is there a Code of Conduct?

Yes! As part of the MLH league, we abide by the MLH Code of Conduct. All organizers and participants are required to agree to the Code of Conduct before participating in the event.
